Substantial Increase in Production of Pulses and Oilseeds

Production of pulses has increased from 14.57 million tonne to 18.09 million tonne during 2008-09 to 2010-11. Similarly, the production of oilseeds has also increased from 27.72 million tonne to 31.10 million tonne during the same period. As regards availability, per capita availability of edible oils also increased from 11.4 kg/ year during 2007-08 to 13.1 kg/ year during 2009-10. However, in case of pulses it has decreased from 15.3 kg/year during 2008 to 11.6 kg/year during 2010. The decrease in per capita availability of pulses could be mainly attributed to slow rate in increase of pulses’ production compared to rate of population growth.

Government has been actively promoting the production of pulses and oilseeds in cluster approach through various crop development schemes viz. National Food Security Mission on Pulses (NFSM-Pulses), Integrated Scheme of Oilseeds, Pulses, Oilpalm & Maize (ISOPOM), Macro-Management of Agriculture (MMA), Integrated Development of 60,000 Pulses villages in Rainfed areas and Special Programme on Oil Palm Area Expansion (OPAE) under RKVY in major pulses and oilseed growing States in the country.

In order to boost the production of pulses further during current rabi season through additional coverage of area, an additional allocation of Rs. 80.00 crore has been made under NFSM-Pulses and released to the States based on the contingency plan prepared by the States.

This information was given by Shri Harish Rawat, Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Processing Industries in written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha.
