Lack of awareness encouraging substance abuse among children: NCPCR

The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) under the Women and Child Development Ministry has emphasized the need to generate awareness among children on the harmful effects of inhalants.

A Central team, led by Shri Vinod Kumar Tikoo, Member, NCPCR paid a visit to National Drug Dependence Treatment Centre, AIIMS, Ghaziabad, along with two other NGOs near here yesterday, to review the prevention, reduction and rehabilitation strategies adopted by the organizations for those suffering from different kinds of addiction.

Highlighting the need to have some kind of legal control over the sale of inhalers commonly abused by children, Sanjay Gupta, Director, Chetna, an NGO, said, “Inhalers like Eraz-ex are easily available in petty shops for a pittance unlike hardcore drugs.’’

A recent study conducted by the organisation has revealed that sale of white ink among street children and working children is between Rs 24 lakh and Rs 67 lakh per day in Delhi

According to data collated by the AIIMS research team there has been a substantial increase (from 31.0 % in 2008 to 40.5% in 2009) in the use of volatile solvents among children.

The NCPCR delegation later visited two NGOs—Chetna and Society For Promotion of Youth and Masses (SYPM)—working in the area of drug abuse among children in need of care and protection and those in conflict with law.

The team also interacted with the children and gave a patient hearing to their problems and needs.
