Samajwadi Party by claiming 224 seats emerged as the single largest party. To form the government it required 202 seats but the party ended up winning 22 more than what was required.
Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP), which had won 206 seats in 2007 assembly polls, was confined to mere 80 seats. Mayawati led party could not manage to win even half of its previous tally. The party, however, will hold the position of principal opposition party in the assembly.
Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) came third in the polls and witnessed victory on 47 seats. Party’s performance, however, witnessed a marginal deterioration as its number of seats came down to 47 from earlier 51.
Congress Party along with its ally Rashtriya Lok Dal managed to win 37 seats and finished fourth in the polls.
As per the Election Commission of India notification issued on 24 December, 2011, elections in UP, were held in seven phases on 8, 11, 15, 19, 23, 28 February and 3 March 2012.
